If you use Gmail and you're worried a website may share your email address with spammers when you sign up for it there's an easy way to combat that. Sign up to the site with the email address [your Gmail username]+[website name]@gmail.com. It will still be delivered to your Gmail inbox. It's a feature built in to Gmail. If you start getting email from other companies at that address with the plus sign then you know your address was shared with spammers. Change the email address with the site and then you can filter subsequent emails to the address with the plus to the junk mail folder. Some sites may not allow the plus sign in the email address you sign up with though...

Email alerts are a great way to stay on top of what's new. You can be alerted of events like celebrity deaths, natural disasters, and political election and sports championship results with CNN breaking news alerts (bottom left under "My Alerts"). Google Alerts is another powerful free service that alerts you to recent news, blog posts, or videos on any topic you specify. You can use this to track the latest developments about a story in the news, a hobby you have, a celebrity, your favorite sports team, a specific company or an industry.

Montastic is a useful service that monitors websites you specify and alerts you if the site has gone down. There are free and paid versions of the service. Are you looking to monitor changes in specific webpages that aren't updated that often? ChangeDetection is your ticket for that one. It can even detect changes in certain parts of the webpage or disregard minor changes in it.

Seems there are time estimates for everything.  If you try to make it a habit of cleaning out your inbox every day why not have a feature for approximating the time it will take you to answer or file every email you have?  It could factor in things like the number of emails, the length of each email, and whether or not it is a mass email like a newsletter or if it was sent only to you. Then you can sit down to put a dent in your box when you have enough time set aside.

Public Service Spam

For the old and/or naive.

Normally I wouldn't encourage any form of spam but after hearing about elderly people who have fallen for the Nigerian email scam I decided it might be a good idea for the ISP's to send out a bulk spam every now and then describing this hoax and others like it so people won't get robbed. Who knows, if it cuts down on the number of people falling for the scams then we might all benefit. Theoretically if the scammers stopped finding victims they'd stopped sending spam, there being no profit in it.

Early Warning System

Spinoff from the public service spam idea.

As I was going through the annos from the aforementioned idea it occurred to me that there are a lot of things I do on a daily basis on the computer that involve more than one or two steps. Inexperienced users probably take even more steps. With that in mind it might be profitable for a company like Symantec to add a fee-based feature to its antivirus product that would let buyers automatically receive emails tailored to their interests and location that are sent to them when the LiveUpdate process takes place during the initial sign-on.

For instance, the program could be set up so that if you set on a flag for "crime reports" and keyed in a distance you'd automatically get a list of the recent crimes falling within the distance you keyed. Another flag could be set on for "traffic reports" that would look for accidents between a start and end point you loaded into the program. If a feature like this was offered then I wouldn't have to mess around with RSS or jump from site to site to get all of the information I'd like to get. I could just fire up my email program, click on the message from Symantec and find everything all put together for me in one spot.

Raise the Babel (or how to really get rid of spam)

One way to get rid of spam would be to destroy the business model of the people who pay spammers to send their messages. If we raised the response rate from a typical .01% to 20% and made sure that the new bogus responses looked real it would quickly become uneconomical for anyone to pay a spammer to send out spam.

They'd waste too much time going through all of the responses to find the legitimate ones. A law creating a quasi-governmental company to take care of this would also be needed to offset any charges of fraud.

Indicators you can check off by default to indicate if an email is high priority, good news, bad news, etc. so you can know which emails to open first.
