Don't underestimate the power of domains you can still hand-register. There are so many killer domains out there that people let expire and no one catches them when they drop. Also, some great brands no one has thought of yet. Just focus, choose that niche and exercise that brain, checking the availability of each one at DomainTools and you'll uncover some hidden gems you can pick up for nothing. If you've got your heart set on some and you've got some ammo hit up the owners and see if they'll swing a trade for it. That's how I got MILFco.com and Funvesting.com. Also, try filtering the biggies like Afternic and Sedo by price and dig through the cheapest ones. You'll find some absolute steals. It's not all about the money. It just takes a will if you're in it to win it.

There's not enough trading going on among domainers. Most just sit on domains waiting for a big payday when some of their domains aren't their specialty. They may have tons of boring generic keyword domains and then some cool brand domains that they're just wasting by parking them forever (and chances are they'll never sell). Someone should create a site where domainers list the best domains they're willing to trade and what they're looking for. Then other domain owners who specialize in those can propose trades to them and they can accept or make counteroffers. Increase liquidity in the domain market which will ultimately get the domains into the hands of the right end users who can better the web with them. I'd make the site but I've got too many other projects in the works.

Sports fans love to show their loyalty to their favorite teams. There's an opportunity to sell the rights to many email addresses such as name@hawkfan.com, name@hawksfan.com, or name@michiganfan.com if you register a lot of domains like those. They can apply to a number of different teams with the particular nickname or city/state so there should be no worry of being confused for an official service of a particular team. You can also extend it to specific athletes or other celebrities (e.g. name@thompsonfan.com and name@jonesfan.com) as well as entire sports (e.g. name@baseballfan.com).

If you're looking to save money when buying domains there are some helpful price comparison sites out there like Domparison and DomainWright. You can compare prices for registrations, transfers and renewals. Do your research by making sure the prices are current and there aren't any extra purchases required for the registrar you choose. Also keep in mind that each registrar provides different features for domains you register with them and different levels of customer support.

Tools like NameFind and the DomainTools name spinner save you tons of time finding potential domains based on keywords you specify. NameFind allows you to include names that are for sale on the secondary market which are usually higher quality. It also lets you zero in on names in a certain price range or in certain extensions (.com, .net, etc.) as well as which ones have the term available on social media services like Facebook or Twitter. The DomainTools tool is more creative with its suggestions but has less options, aftermarket info and social media info.

With domain registrations under $10 per year for many extensions at most registrars, it's pretty much a no-brainer to get your full name as one of your domains. It's an ideal place to post your resume, link to any other websites you've created, and otherwise create a personal homepage for yourself.  If your last name is unusual it may be available in an extension such as .com, .net, .org, .me or .name. Then you may be able to have a great email address like firstname@lastname.com. With the .us extension couples or families can get matching email addresses in the format firstname@lastname.us
